Sun Broadband Wireless Working in Puppy Linux
Posting this using Opera 9.64 in a Puppy Linux 4.2 operating system.
Open a terminal and type:
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003
This prevents the Huawei E220 modem from being detected as a USB storage device.
Then edit or create /etc/wvdial.conf and add this to the very beginning of the document:
[Dialer sun]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init1 =
Init2 = ATZ
Carrier Check = yes
Dial Command = ATDT
Phone = *99#
Username = MY2USERNAME
Password = MY2PASSWORD
Stupid Mode = yes
Auto Reconnect = yes
wvdial is the application that puppy uses to connect to the internet using a modem. This also might be working in other distros that can have wvdial. More information about wvdial here.
Go to Menu -> Network -> PupDial. Click on Connect to the Internet under Account 1
You are connected when it says:
–> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
–> Starting pppd at Thu Apr 16 07:30:11 2009
–> pid of pppd: 10101
Hullo,
Stumbled upon your blog after searching for tips on Puppy.
I am a total Puppy newbie, just installed 4.2 today on an old machine. I have the huawei 160
modem for Sun. Can you post specific idiot proof instuctions on how to make it work?
Thanks!
malloy
hello malloy!
I have the huawei e220 and unfortunately I don’t have any idea how to configure your modem for internet connection.
Although I guess looking for the correct settings for your network would greatly help.
I’m a puppy newbie myself. Just tried Puppy and see if it works. I went back to Ubuntu now so I guess I’m sorry I couldn’t help much.
Wow! I appreciate your quick reply. By some stroke of intensified dumb luck and by following your posted instructions, I was able to make it work! Sadly, not ten hours later, Puppy crashed, without warning. Errors on “Stale NFS” that wiped out all the desktop icons. And I thought I had seen the last of the blue screen crashes. The old windows xp install must have jinxed the old PC somehow…
I did a quick search for ‘puppy stale nfs’ and I found interesting results. Why don’t try some of those.
From what I can understand a Stale NFS error means that you have a messed up file system which can happen when when you improperly shut down your computer.
Try doing e2fsck on the file system.
yep, I tried the e2fsck command. got the system working but I have not restored the default icons yet. The machine still hangs randomly , i suspect some hardware bugs(?) And I cannot seem to install openoffice 3.1(?) , hangs at install.
Meanwhile I ‘ve gotten back to my old ubuntu 6+ install on another machine.
Would you know if the same commands apply to make the modem running on ubuntu?
The newest version of Ubuntu will automatically detect your huawei modem
